Kuala Lumpur SEA Games exceeds sponsorship target

Kuala Lumpur SEA Games exceeds sponsorship target
June 5, 2017

The Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) has announced that it has succeeded in surpassing the initial sponsorship target of RM80 million (US$18.7 million) for the 29th Kuala Lumpur South East Asian (SEA) Games and the 9th Asean Para Games.

Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said with the latest sponsorship from local pewter manufacturer Royal Selangor, MASOC had garnered RM82.7 million (US$19.3 million) in sponsorships.

Speaking at a ceremony introducing the Games' medals and the announcement of Royal Selangor as a silver sponsor for KL 2017, Minister Khairy explained “we have achieved 103% or RM82.7 million ... our target was RM80 million, so we have exceeded our KPI in terms of sponsorship.”

With the medals, Minister Khairy praised the initiative taken by Royal Selangor to combine local materials in their design.

Meanwhile, in spite of conflicting reports, Kuala Lumpur remains in the running to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) having last week hosted a three-day visit by a team from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

OCM President Tunku Imran advised “it is important to clarify Malaysia’s interest in and engagement with the CGF as part of the exploratory process for a future Commonwealth Games, including exploring the potential for 2022 or 2026.

“This is not a traditional bid process but a partnership approach led by the CGF with prospective interested countries and we are delighted to be part of the selection process.

“We are committed to the power of sport and our place on the world stage and passionately believe there are enormous hosting benefits for Malaysia associated with the Commonwealth Games.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the CGF Team through the next stage of the host city selection process.”

With the South African city of Durban having been stripped of the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to missed financial milestones, a number of cities including Liverpool and Birmingham in the United Kingdom along with the Melbourne and Perth are being considered as Games hosts.

The 29th SEA Games will take place from 19th to 30th August while the 9th Asean Para Games will be held from 17th to 19th September.
