Kuwait has signaled its ambitions to join the growing ranks of Arabian Gulf nations bidding to host major international sporting event with a deal to build a 7,000 seat indoor sport arena.
The $53 million deal to build an indoor Olympic stadium for basketball and volleyball was agreed by the country's Public Authority for Youth and Sports (PAYS).
The Kuwait Times quoyed PAYS President Fuad Al-Falah as stating "this is the first of its kind project that we have introduced in Kuwait, and I consider it to be the beginning of the real rising in sports that we are looking for.
"It also gives us the opportunity to host regional and international sports events here in Kuwait."
The stadium project, located in Sabah Al-Salem, will cover 19,000 metre2 with an additional 9,000 metre2 of parking. The stadium will have 5,000 seats and there will be two adjacent halls each with 1,840 seats, the project's manager Rasha Al-Sayegh told the paper.
Al-Sayegh explained that the project will take 30 months to complete.
