Planning of Lake Macquarie City Council’s hosting of the 2014 International Children’s Games is advancing with the world’s largest multi-sport youth games event securing funding and support from Destination NSW.

To be held from 6th to 11th December, Lake Macquarie’s hosting of the event marks the first time that Games will have been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere in the 50 year history of the International Children's Games (ICG).

The ICG is the largest multi-sport youth games in the world for athletes aged between 12 and 15 years and is a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee. Having been the first Australian city to compete in the ICG, Lake Macquarie is looking forward to welcoming athletes, coaches, city representatives and visitors from around the world and to delivering an event that inspires young people to build cross-cultural relationships as they compete on an international stage.

Commenting on the potential of the Games, local MP Andrew Cornwell recently stated “the International Children’s Games is a great tourism opportunity for not only Lake Macquarie but the Hunter Region and New South Wales.

“This prestigious event will present a wide range of opportunities for local businesses and the community when more than 5,000 international visitors, including athletes, coaches and supporters descend to our shores for a week of activities, sporting competition and festivities.”

It is estimated the International Children’s Games will deliver more than $5 million to the local and regional economy.

Events at the Games will include:

• Swimming at The Forum, The University of Newcastle

• Gymnastics at Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale

• Track and Field at Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale

• Football at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility 

• Sailing at Belmont 16 Footers, Belmont

• Water Polo at Speers Point Pool, Speers Point

• Golf at Waratah Golf Course, Argenton

• BMX at The Lake Macquarie BMX Club, Argenton.
