Main construction now underway on Victoria’s Surf Coast Aquatic and Health Centre
March 11, 2025

Main construction is now underway on the Surf Coast Aquatic and Health Centre - renamed in December 2024 to the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre project - located in Torquay. Wurdi Baierr is Wadawurrung for ‘big gathering place’.

The centre is a partnership project involving the Australian Government, the Victorian Government and Surf Coast Shire Council.

The cost for stage one works is $46.34 million. Surf Coast Shire Council secured $20 million from the Australian Government and $16.68 million from the Victorian Government. Stage two works will be fully funded by the Victorian Government, with the amount to be confirmed.

The new aquatic and health building will adjoin and share its entry with the existing Wurdi Baierr Stadium in Torquay.

Contractors have completed preliminary site works, including delivery of a new car park and a new path linking the car park, Wadawurrung Way and Kuwarrk Lane with the existing Wurdi Baierr Stadium.

New fencing now encloses the main construction site where pools will be excavated and the double-storey building will rise.

Stage one main construction works will include:

  • 25-metre indoor pool for lap/squad swimming
  • Warm water indoor pool for exercise, hydrotherapy and leisure
  • Gym and programs spaces
  • Allied health suites
  • Café and supporting amenities.

Stage two works in planning include:

  • A dedicated indoor learn to swim pool
  • Indoor splash park
  • Spa, sauna and steam room
  • More change rooms.

Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor Mike Bodsworth enthused “we are excited to have reached this significant milestone with main construction of Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre underway.

“Preliminary works on the site including construction of the new car park have progressed well and we thank users of the busy sporting and school precinct for their continued understanding while access changes are in place.

“This centre will be a wonderful asset for our community. We look forward to the health and wellbeing benefits it will bring for people of all ages and abilities for decades to come.”

Main construction is expected to be complete late in 2026.
