read moreThe Geelong sporting community is celebrating, following the completion of a major facilities upgrade at the Belmont Lions Sports Club set to create a more inclusive environment.
Senator for Victoria David Van noted the upgrades, set to benefit a number of football, netball and cricket clubs, would create a more inclusive environment, especially for female players, advsing "with women's sport on the rise across the country, it is great to see the club fully catering for both genders with two new change rooms, eight unisex showers, six toilets and a unisex umpires change room."
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack noted that the project would help boost membership numbers and support the club's sustainability, explaining "by investing in grassroots sports infrastructure, we are not only catering to Geelong's growing population but ensuring the city continues to be a great place to live.”
Victorian Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes noted the improvements, including a tiered viewing area and trainers’ room, would encourage more people to get involved in local sport, adding "with a more inclusive sporting environment on offer, we expect to see a rise in the number of players and teams using these fine facilities.”
The project was jointly funded with the Australian Government investing $580,000, the Victorian Government $100,000, the City of Greater Geelong $103,233, the East Belmont Cricket Club $100,000 and the Belmont Lions Sports Club $22,000.
