The push for a new stadium for the city of Townsville, given impetus with the North Queensland Cowboys’ historic win in the 2015 NRL Grand Final, has been boosted by city leaders meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The planned new CBD Stadium, part of a plan to transform the inner city including an arts precinct, boardwalks, restaurants and hotels, has already secured a $100 million funding commitment from the Queensland Government.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill is aware of the challenges, recently telling the ABC "we know the Federal Government hasn't in the past supported stadiums but we're talking about the entertainment and convention centre, we're talking about a tropical sports science institute for Townsville."

Cowboys' captain Johnathan Thurston's public show of support at the NRL grand final for a new Townsville Stadium has put the issue on the national agenda.

Townsville Enterprise Chief Executive Patricia O'Callaghan explained this is "now a topic of national discussion (and) the pressure is now on for our governments to deliver to the north.

"It's time that this region stops playing second fiddle to our capital cities, because this isn't a new conversation.

"The region does deserve a new stadium and entertainment centre.

During a recent visit to Townsville, Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten confirmed that a future Labor Federal Government would match the state's $100 million contribution for a new stadium.

Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad welcomed Shorten's pledge, adding "we all know that this is very important piece of social infrastructure for the town."
