Mould contamination discovered at Redland Performing Arts Centre

Mould contamination discovered at Redland Performing Arts Centre
April 13, 2025

Redland City Council has revealed the members of the public have been exposed to mould at the Redland Performing Arts Centre.

The revelation follows the Council having initially advised early last week that mould had been detected at the venue, but that it was in isolated locations inaccessible to the public.

However, in response to further questioning from ABC Brisbane, the Council later confirmed that three concert hall chairs had been contaminated with mould.

A council spokesperson said confirmation about the mould in the concert hall was received late on Monday and that the affected chairs had been remove, noting “the current mould situation does not meet the requirements for a notifiable incident in relation to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

"Despite the situation not being notifiable, council is continuing to manage, treat and remediate the mould appropriately and in accordance with any guidelines or advice provided by experts."

The venue has recently been used by members of the public this moth, including a 27 Club performance and a magic show.

The Council spokesperson said mould was discovered at the centre after it was waterlogged by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

They said mould was found in the roofs of the green room and bar and in the basement and technical offices.

The spokesperson said specialist contractors were working to determine the variety of the mould and to see where else it had spread.

In the meantime the Council has placed air filters throughout the Centre and moved several workers into different offices.

The spokesperson went on to stated "Redland City Council is committed to ensuring the safety of performers, staff and audience members at Redland Performing Arts Centre.

"Due to several upcoming public holidays and previously scheduled maintenance, no events are booked at RPAC over the next 20 days."
