read moreThe National Basketball League (NBL) has announced that Jeremy Loeliger, its Commissioner since 2019, will be stepping down from the role.
In a statement, the NBL advised of “its heartfelt appreciation to … Loeliger for his immense contribution to the organisation over the past nine years as he steps down from the role to pursue other interests.”
NBL Owner and Executive Chairman, Larry Kestelman noted “without Jeremy, the NBL wouldn’t be where it is today and I want to thank him for everything he has done over the past nine years to support my vision.
“Jeremy’s time at the League has been underpinned by exceptional innovation, unwavering dedication and an inspiring passion for basketball. He has helped transform the NBL into the second-best basketball league in the world, and the fastest growing sporting league in Australia.”
Loeliger served as the NBL’s Chief Executive from 2015 to 2019, before taking on the role of Commissioner from 2019 to 2024.
With a vision to always grow and improve the NBL, Loeliger pioneered the NBL Next Stars program, was a driving force in the creation of the NBLxNBA preseason games, took the NBL global on tours to China, fostered strong relationships with FIBA and other global organisations, struck several CBA deals with the Players’ Association, and introduced the NBL to new audiences through NBL Oz Gaming amongst other achievements.
He has also been a champion for diversity and inclusion and played a pivotal role in the establishment and continued evolution of the NBL’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group, and as Co-Chair of the RAP Working Group.
NBL Chief Executive, David Stevenson added “Jeremy has been instrumental in the unprecedented growth of the League.
“His strong strategic foresight helped us flourish into one of the best entertainment products and the fastest growing sport in Australia.
“Jeremy’s transformative tenure as NBL Commissioner will always be appreciated, and the entire basketball community will forever be thankful for the work he has done in the game.”
Loeliger’s tenure as Commissioner comes to an end as the NBL celebrates the historic selection of Next Star Alexandre Sarr as the number 2 pick in the NBA draft - the highest ever for a player coming out of the NBL.
Loeliger will continue to provide consulting services to the NBL.
