Netball Australia confirms new Directors, players protest fizzles

Netball Australia confirms new Directors, players protest fizzles
April 22, 2017

At the end of a week of controversy, Netball Australia's AGM yesterday confirmed the appointment of Cheryl McCormack, Marcia Ella-Duncan, and Susan Comerford to its Board of Directors.

McCormack and Ella-Duncan will commence three-year terms, with Comerford appointed for a one-year term, filling a casual vacancy after the removal of Anne-Marie Corboy from the Board.

With former chair Anne-Marie Corboy being dumped from the board last week and the prospect of Director Kathryn Harby-Williams not being re-elected, the Australian Netball Players’ Association (ANPA) had threatened a player strike and had raised the prospect of a rebel league at suggestions that the widely praised pay and conditions deal for elite players revealed last September might be rolled back.

However, in matches played last night, players merely joined in a collective huddle to show solidarity, with fixtures unaffected.

Five candidates were contesting three spots on Netball Australia’s board, with Harby-Williams, whose re-appointment had been described as "not-negotiable" by the players, and Jan Magaccis missing out.

Presenting a united front after the elections, Netball Australia’s Board of Directors Chair, Paolina Hunt stated “we are confident that our Board of Directors has a dynamic combination of experience.

“Now that the vote has been determined, we are ready to move forward collectively and focus on creating the best outcomes for our sport.

“Netball Australia and its member grganisations share a vision and commitment to grow the game, and the appointment of Directors puts us in a strong position to address our key priorities.

“We are committed to seeing our athletes be the first fully professional female athletes, whilst supporting them with the best conditions.”

The organisation’s key strategic objectives in the immediate future are to build on the new Suncorp Super Netball, drive innovation in our game through new participation offerings, such as Fast5 Netball, and continue to expand on the success of netball as Australia’s number one female participation sport.

New Directors:

Cheryl McCormack - a former Australian representative in netball and touch football, McCormack has held management positions in AFL, NRL, racing and Paralympic sport and has experience working on major events including the IRB Rugby World Cup.

She currently works for the NSW Government’s lead agency for Tourism and Major Events Destination New South Wales where she was Project Director for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

Marcia Ella-Duncan is an experienced netball player, coach and administrator who has represented Australia and NSW and has a career in netball spanning 40 years.

Ella-Duncan became the first Aboriginal netballer to play for Australia, featuring in 18 Tests including winning a silver medal at the 1987 Netball World Cup.

Ella-Duncan is now a member of Netball Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group and in the past has been a member of numerous government advisory and investigative boards and committees related to legislation and policy affecting Aboriginal people.

Susan Comerford is a corporate and commercial lawyer with expertise include in human resources, including performance management, professional development, leadership and strategic planning.
