read moreThe Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon being held on 16th April will offer a new central city loop course taking in Hagley Park, Christchurch Town Hall, Cranmer Square and the Ōtākaro Avon River.
Around 4000 runners and walkers are anticipated to be participating in the event with Race Director Chris Cox noting “with a more compact course, we’re hoping to create a real buzz and festival atmosphere with spectators and supporters able to watch from around the central city course.”
Participants will run the 10.55km loop up to four times, depending on the event they have entered.
Cox added “it’s a fast, flat course, suitable for everyone, including elite nationally ranked runners, club runners, recreational joggers and fitness walkers
Christchurch City Council Manager of Events and Arts Lucy Blackmore says people planning to come into the city on race day should plan ahead to avoid delays and adds “the central city is open for business, and we’d love to see supporters out in force around the course. But it will be important to plan your route ahead of time.”
Road closures and detours will be in place from 5am to 1.30pm to prevent vehicles from crossing the marathon route. Race organisers advise those wanting to travel in and around the city to use the four avenues. Those wanting to access the central city should approach/depart from the south or east.
The Frontrunner Christchurch Marathon is on Sunday 16 April. A full list of road closures is available on the Council website.
