New sports facilities planned for Logan Community

New sports facilities planned for Logan Community
April 29, 2020

Aiming to provide better access to sporting facilities for Queensland’s Browns Plains State School students and the local community, the Queensland Government is to deliver a new change room, field lighting and other minor works. The State Government is using the COVID-19 lockdown to deliver this project quickly avoiding any inconvenience during the construction phase.

Browns Plains State School has extensive grounds which can accommodate four adventure playgrounds, netball and basketball courts and two ovals.

In 2019, the school signed a Joint Development Agreement with the Logan City Council and Mets Junior Rugby League Club for a ten year use of the ovals for training and competition sports stating that they were delighted to partner with this community club to better use the facilities and support our community.

Queensland Minister for Planning Cameron Dick said it was important community infrastructure projects continued to progress during these tough times.

Minister Dick advised “planned works include construction of single-storey change room facility, amenities, storage, a multipurpose space, a canteen, and four new field lights around the existing oval.

“These new facilities will be put to great use by the fantastic kids at Brown Plains State School, and others in our community.”

Queensland Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the project is part of the government’s $12 million Community Use of Schools program, which gives Queensland communities greater access to school facilities.

Minister de Brenni added “If this pandemic has reminded us of anything, it’s the critical role that community sport plays.

“Through our Community Use of Schools program we’re helping break down some of the barriers to participation, with at least 12 new sporting infrastructure projects set to be delivered in Queensland schools by 2022.

Education Minister Grace Grace said construction was expected to commence in the coming months advising “although school sporting activities have currently been paused, we’re getting to work on this project now so students can enjoy these new facilities sooner.”
