New Swimming WA facility looks to aid progression from swimming lessons to clubs
July 17, 2018

Swimming WA’s WestSwim business unit is increasing learn-to-swim opportunities in the fast growing area to the south of Perth with the recent opening of WestSwim Lakelands.

Located at the Lakelands Shopping Centre between Rockhampton and Mandurah, the new facility is WestSwim’s third, offering learn-to-swim opportunities for children from three months, along with classes for aged and multi class individuals, together with adult learn to swim classes and in-term swim classes for schools in the area.

This purpose built facility, has in-built teaching ledges and is heated to 32 degrees all year round making it the perfect environment for learn to swim.

Swimming WA Chief Executive Darren Beazley said that for many years the missing ingredient for parents of youngsters learning to swim was the lack of progression from learning to swim into swimming clubs, stating “the most important thing we seek from opening our third learn to swim centre is that WestSwim Lakelands will provide the model for a clearly defined pathway from a positive and highly credentialed learn to swim experience into a swimming club environment.”

In designing the facility, international architecture firm Buchan sought to design an innovative and sustainable facility for children and adults.

According to Buchan Associate Director Anna Meszaros, special consideration was given to ensure noise reverberation was minimised and the pool hall’s highly corrosive indoor environment - with high levels of heat and humidity - was accommodated in the design.

Meszaros explained “the solution was to install a custom-designed tension member to fit the structural ceiling system and strategically position it directly over the pool to offset and diffuse the mid-high frequency reverberation.

“We also worked with WestSwim’s graphic consultant and signage contractor to further reduce noise reverberation by introducing a 3D wall mural which provided an ‘acoustic band’ at the end wall.

“This provided further acoustic balance, while adding a fitting decorative element to the space.”

Sustainability initiatives incorporated into the Centre include:

• Passive solar design
• Optimisation of natural daylighting and daylight distribution
• Use of energy-efficent lighting
• Water efficient fixtures
• Automated, insulated thermal pool blankets to maintain water temperatures and reduce evaporation out of hours. This has the added benefit of reducing humidity in the pool hall.
• Use of low maintenance durable materials
• Measures to reduce air conditioning load by minimising uncontrolled air movement between spaces with differential temperatures and humanity levels
• Insulated building envelope from the outside which is a cost-effective strategy to reduce energy
• Use of water-wise drought-tolerant landscaping

WestSwim has been providing learn to swim services since 2008 also operating swim schools at the Chisholm Catholic College and the Churchlands Senior High School in Perth.
