read moreThe town of Narrogin in Western Australia will celebrate the opening of their new synthetic turf hockey surface with two games between the Kookaburras and Great Britain this weekend.
Tomorrow will see Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies officially open the new surface and welcome the Australian men's hockey team and the Great Britain team to the Wheatbelt town.
Minister Davies stated "this is an exciting opportunity for regional Western Australia. Australia won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and defeated Great Britain, so we expect the competition to be world-class."
The new synthetic hockey turf was made possible in part through the Western Australia Government's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund's (CSRFF) contribution of $146,692.
The total cost of the turf resurfacing was about $423,000, with the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association contributed the remaining $276,000.
Minister Davies continued "the new turf has enhanced the quality and status of hockey in the region and we look forward to seeing more big events here, given it has been resurfaced to international standards.
The two games in Narrogin this weekend are the Kookaburras' final home warm-ups before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Two games will be held in Narrogin on 21st and 22nd May, with a final game in Perth on Tuesday (24th May).
Minister Davies concluded "Narrogin is a regional hockey powerhouse and it's an exciting opportunity for local fans to see a couple of world-class games on home turf and watch their heroes play.
"I hope these games inspire those locals involved in hockey - or thinking about becoming involved - as it's a wonderful sport to keep you fit, healthy and engaged with the community."
The Kookaburras' next engagement is in London for the 2016 men's hockey Champions Trophy (from 10th to 17th June), with the final Rio squad being decided soon afterwards.
