New three-year deal signed for IRONMAN Western Australia

New three-year deal signed for IRONMAN Western Australia
January 5, 2018

IRONMAN Western Australia will remain in Busselton for another three years, with the Western Australian Government announcing that it will continue to fund the annual five-day festival until 2020.

Held in Busselton, IRONMAN Western Australia features three key sporting events and a range of supporting events. The pinnacle of the festival is an IRONMAN triathlon, where participants complete a 3.8 kilometre swim, 180 kilometre cycle and 42.2 kilometre run.

There is also an IRONKIDS event, which gives children aged between seven and 13 year the opportunity to take part in a triathlon, and the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon, which was introduced to the schedule last year and allows participants to complete half the distance of an IRONMAN triathlon.

The Western Australian Government expects the event to contribute about $23.5 million to the local economy over the next three years, drawing competitors and spectators from 41 different countries including Singapore, Japan, Great Britain and the United States of America.

IRONMAN Western Australia also has a positive impact on the local community through the employment of more than 100 contractors and 1,700 volunteers - the majority coming from the local area.

Western Australian Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said the triathlon continued to grow in popularity and delivered significant economic and social benefits to the State, commenting “the State Government, through Tourism WA, is proud to support IRONMAN Western Australia for a further three years.

"This event has been running in WA since 2004 and continues to attract thousands of visitors to the State each year.

"Last year's event attracted 4,098 out-of-State visitors, including competitors and spectators, resulting in about $8.3 million of direct expenditure to the State.

"The course highlights some of the most stunning scenery that Busselton has to offer, including the iconic Busselton Jetty, and with about 58% of the field from outside of Western Australia, it will provide fantastic exposure of the South-West region."
