read moreUncertainty surrounding the future of swimming pool provision in Parramatta has been ended with the NSW Government today announcing a $30 million funding commitment for a brand new aquatic centre.
With the existing Parramatta War Memorial Swimming Pool to be demolished to make way for the new Western Sydney Stadium, the commitment to a new aquatic centre answers community critics who were concerned that the closure of the 60-year old pool would leave the City of Parramatta Council, with a population of more than 230,000, without a year-round swimming centre.
Making the funding announcement on the day of the closure of the Parramatta Swimming Pool, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian stated “delivery of major infrastructure across Parramatta is moving at a rapid pace and now users of this 60 year old Memorial Pool will have a brand new state of the art facility to call home.”
NSW Minister for Western Sydney and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres added “we committed from the outset to deliver a replacement facility as part of the Western Sydney Stadium project and now Councils’ investigations into potential locations and consultation have progressed to a good level, we can announce the funding to help deliver a new aquatic centre.
“The future facility, expected to be located within the former Parramatta Golf Course, will form another key part of Parramatta’s transformation and represent a massive win for residents and visitors alike.
“As work continues on the game changing infrastructure like Western Sydney Stadium, WestConnex, Parramatta Light Rail and Sydney Metro West, this Government is committed to ensure smaller projects significant to the community are delivered.”
The City of Parramatta Council is currently inviting comments on possible locations for the new facility, with the former Parramatta Golf Course seen as the most likely with consultancy reports for that site have previously been undertaken.
Development of the new facility will continue between the NSW Government, the Council and the Parramatta Park Trust.
While the NSW Government has committed to build the new centre as quickly as possible, the development is likely to take a minimum of three years.
