read moreThe City of Perth has welcomed the opening of the new Optus Stadium, with Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi commening the Western Australian Government’s $1.4 billion venue investment for having delivered a catalyst for significant opportunities for the city.
Lord Mayor Scaffidi stated “Optus Stadium is a stunning piece of architecture and will quickly become an iconic feature of Perth.
“People arriving to the city from the east corridors - including the airport - are greeted by its striking design, reinforcing the uniqueness of Perth and enhancing vitality in the central city.
“This is a turning point for Perth and just one of many city-shaping projects contributing to the $13 billion economic injection into our city from both State Government and private enterprise.
“Perth has reconnected with Northbridge and the Swan River through the City Link and Elizabeth Quay respectively, and a new eastern gateway is being developed at Waterbank.”
The Lord Mayor said these major developments were changing the conversation around Perth’s competitive edge and combined with the countercyclical opportunities, this economic catalyst had driven the launch of Serious Business Move, Perth’s dedicated investment and business attraction website.
Lord Mayor Scaffidi added “with daily, direct flights connecting London and Perth from March, a five-hour flight time to Singapore and plans for further non-stop routes to Shanghai, Tokyo, Jakarta and India, Perth is poised to become a gateway for tourists, business travellers and international students.
“Since 2012, 1,485 new hotel rooms have been built in Perth, with another 1,409 under construction. These developments are transforming the city and providing quality and affordable accommodation options.”
Premier hotels such as the award-winning COMO Treasury and the new InterContinental Perth City Centre will be soon joined by the Westin (2018), Hilton’s Doubletree (2019) and the Ritz Carlton (2019).
Lord Mayor Scaffidi concluded “contrary to popular belief, the cost of living is lower here than most Australian capital cities and Perth is rated as the seventh most liveable city in the world.
“Now is the time to capitalise on the opportunities in Perth.”
