O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat farewells family patriarch Peter O’Reilly

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat farewells family patriarch Peter O’Reilly
March 13, 2025

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat has shared the sad news of the passing of Peter ‘Big Pete’ O’Reilly on 5th March advising "Big Pete was a true Guardian of the Rainforest, the beloved patriarch of the O'Reilly family and a pioneering icon in the Australian ecotourism industry.

“Big Pete's childhood love for climbing trees led him to create the world's first Tree Top Walk in 1986, allowing thousands of visitors to witness the magic of the rainforest canopy from high up above. His vision transformed O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat into a haven for eco-tourism and conservation.

“Beyond the treetops, Big Pete's legacy includes initiating an annual week-long special interest program in 1978 for birdwatchers known as ‘Bird Week’, which continues to unite enthusiasts worldwide and is in its 48th year. His warmth and wisdom touched countless lives, inspiring all who met him.

“Now, as he did in life, Big Pete soars among the treetops. Thankyou Big Pete, for your vision, passion, storytelling and all of the unforgettable memories which we will always cherish. Your legacy will stand as tall as the beautiful rainforest that you loved so dearly.”

Big Pete's funeral will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Beaudesert, Queensland on Friday 21st March at 11am - all are welcome to attend.

On the news of Peter O’Reilly’s passing Ecotourism Australia Chief Executive Elissa Keenan shared “I know Big Pete will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and our thoughts are with his family.  We recognise Big Pete and the entire O’Reilly family for their outstanding contribution to the Australian tourism industry.

“O’Reilly’s is one of our long-running certified operators, first receiving ECO Certification in 1998 – an incredible 27 years of leading the way in showing how tourism can make a positive contribution to conservation.

“Big Pete made some incredible contributions to ecotourism, including building one of the world’s first suspended treetop walkways (in 1986), establishing a birdwatching program and founding the Green Mountains Natural History Association, which provides information on the flora and fauna of Lamington National Park.

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat is nestled away in the Gold Coast Hinterland, in the Lamington National Park - part of Australia’s ancient Gondwana Rainforests. The Retreat offers an array of family friendly activities with stunning views across the western McPherson Ranges.

O’Reilly’s Accommodation Options
There is a range of different options to choose from.  The main guesthouse has the majority of the rooms, or for something a little more secluded, you can opt to stay in one of the architecturally designed self-contained villas which are perched on the hillside. There is also a campground on the property with glamping tents available

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat offerings include:

O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk (Booyong Walk)
A popular activity for everyone that visits O’Reilly’s is the Tree Top Walk.  Built in 1986, this was the very first tree top walkway in the world. The Tree Top Walk is 160 metres in length and made up of nine suspension bridges perched some 15 metres above the ground.  It is the perfect way to get a bird’s eye view of the rainforest canopy.

Guided Bird Walk
The Lamington National Park is home to impressive birdlife, many of which can be seen just a few hundred metres from your room.  A great way to learn about the birds that call the local area home is to join an experienced guide for a bird walk around the property.

Bird Feeding at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat
As well as bird watching, each day you can participate in feeding the birds.  These are wild birds, so their visit is not guaranteed, but most days you’re bound to see friendly Crimson Rosella’s and King Parrots.
