The Council had taken advantage of the Australian Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH program to provide 15 young residents with essential on-the-job training through the City’s leisure centres.
Hume Mayor Councillor Drew Jessop stated “we’re providing young locals aged between 15 and 24 with work placements in our leisure centres through the Australian Government’s Youth Jobs PaTH program.
“These placements will give this group of interns real, practical experience which they may not have been able to access otherwise."
Mayor Jessop said the interns also had an opportunity to gain qualifications that would assist with future employment, adding “not only will the participants be provided with eight weeks of on the job training, they will also be able to obtain specific qualifications based on interest areas - such as pool lifeguard, AUSTSWIM and fitness certifications.
“Once obtained, these training outcomes will be transferable to any employer and are highly recognised in the leisure industry.”
The program sees interns shadow current aquatic and recreation centre staff to learn critical on the job skills, providing mutually beneficial opportunities for both Hume staff and the interns.
Mayor Jessop said upon successful completion of the program, it was hoped that interns would secure a position at one of the City’s Leisure Centres.
He concluded “the cherry on top would be for the interns to gain ongoing employment and to see this program expand across other Hume work areas.
“The Youth Jobs PaTH program is a fantastic opportunity for skill-building and potential employment and Hume is incredibly proud to facilitate it.”
The Youth Jobs PaTH program is designed to support young people to gain the skills and work experience they need to get and keep a job.
It also supports employers to host internship placements and provides them with incentives when they take on a young person.
