Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) has announced that philanthropist has been named as its Ambassador.

In a statement, PLA Chief Executive Mark Band advised “we are honored to announce Susan Alberti as a Parks and Leisure Australia Ambassador.

“Susan is an incredible patron a truly remarkable woman that understands the importance of grass roots sport and the importance of parks and open spaces in developing happy, healthy and prosperous communities.

“A true inspiration, founder of the women’s Australian Rules Football League, advocate for grass roots sport and philanthropist supporting the battle against Juvenile diabetes. “We couldn’t think of a more inspirational and perfectly aligned Ambassador. We look forward to working with Susan in developing great places and spaces for all Australians."

Alberti’s first appearance for PLA will be at the upcoming International Parks and Leisure Congress at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 14th to 17th October.

Susan Alberti AC is one of Australia’s pre-eminent philanthropists, having donated millions of dollars to medical research and other charitable causes over her successful business career. She developed a passion for medical research when her only child, Danielle, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the 1980s.

With Danielle tragically dying from the complications arising from the chronic disease, Alberti’s lifelong commitment to raise funds for better prevention, treatment and to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes became a dedicated mission.

This has subsequently led her to focus on medical research more broadly.

Susan Alberti was a finalist in the Australian of the Year Award in 1997 and again in 2009.

In 1997 she received an AM (Member of the Order of Australia) for her contribution towards the cause of diabetes research. Sue was awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) on 26th January 2007.

This recognised her long and outstanding contribution to major medical research institutions, particularly as a philanthropist, fundraiser and advocate for Type 1 diabetes care and research.

On Australia Day 2016, Alberti was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) Award in recognition for her eminent service to the community, particularly through philanthropic and fundraising support for a range of medical research, education and sporting organisations, as an advocate for improved health care services for the disadvantaged, and to young women as a role model and mentor.

Alberti is a former President of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Chairman of the St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research Foundation and is Vice President of Western Bulldogs Football Club, as well as holding a number of other honorary philanthropic positions.
