Racing legend Bart Cummings remembered at celebration of South Australian sport

A remembrance of the career and life achievements of racing legend Bart Cummings formed the centrepiece of the KPMG Celebration of South Australian Sport held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on the evening of Wednesday 25th November.

Adelaide born Cummings, who died in August at the age of 87, was commemorated during the evening in a feature, Remembering Legend Bart Cummings AM 1927 – 2015, providing an insight into his outstanding career.

Presented for the sixth year, the KPMG Celebration of South Australian Sport included a range of other highlights including The Advertiser Channel Seven Sports Star of the Year Awards; the Sport SA Awards and the induction of new members to the PMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame.

Named as The Advertiser Channel Seven Sports Star of the Year, Rohan Dennis has enjoyed an outstanding year, winning the Tour Down Under in January and becoming only the seventh Australian ever to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France.

Swimmer Kyle Chalmers who has also achieved on the international stage took out The Advertiser Channel 7 Junior Sports Star of the Year.

Team of the Year, Adelaide United after winning the FFA Cup in late 2014, while netballer Renae Ingles was voted as the Alexander Symonds People’s Choice.

Brayden Davidson, Athletics, was awarded the West Beach Community Branch, Bendigo Bank Elite Athlete with a Disability of the Year and Danielle Hill, Harness Racing, received the Tanya Denver Award for Endeavour and Sportsmanship.

The support team behind athletes and the sport industry was recognised with the Sport SA Awards.

These were presented to:

• Arthur J. Gallagher Administrator of the Year - Sue Dewing from SANFL
• Coach of the Year from Golf SA - Gareth Jones
• Sunday Mail City Bay Fun Run Inc. Volunteer Award - James Lang, Cricket
• Club One Official of the Year - Steve Davis, Cricket
• Country Athlete of the Year (supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport) - Georgia Seidel, Rowing
• Significant Event of the Year Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run (Athletics)
• Community Event of the Year - Surf Life Saving SA Junior State Championships
• Our school sport champions, Richard Newman Primary School Sports Award (sponsored by the South Australian Department for Education & Child Development) - Charlotte  Kempenaers-Pocz, Tennis (Glenelg Primary School) 
• Secondary School Sports Award (sponsored by Messenger Community News Limited) -  Kyle Chalmers, Swimming (Immanuel College). 

As announced in October, the addition of five new inductees into the KPMG South Australian Sport Hall of Fame has seen 50 individuals recognised for their lifetime achievements.

Wednesday’s Gala Event, attended by 420 people, also saw 2010 Hall of Fame inductees Michelle Den Dekker OAM, Gillian Rolton OAM and Mike Turtur OAM share the highlights of their outstanding sporting careers.

The evening was hosted by Channel Seven identities Mark Soderstrom and Jessica Adamson.

Commenting on the night and what it represents, Sport SA Chief Executive Jan Sutherland stated “we are delighted to celebrate every aspect of sport, from the people on the fields, courts and pool, in the offices, training venues and schools with you.

“Sport SA showcases sport and will ensure that we record and recognise these achievements for the future. Thank you to our partners, members and friends for your support and ensuring that sport success is profiled for South Australian community.”
