read moreThe Western Australian Government has completed the significant restoration work on the facade of the heritage listed His Majesty's Theatre.
Western Australian Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the $2 million restoration had been essential for safety reasons, stating "with this significant restoration and upgrade, His Majesty's Theatre will continue to be part of Perth's cultural life for many, many years.
"As the only working Edwardian theatre in Australia, the meticulous facade restoration was vital to ensure the theatre's future viability and its preservation as a heritage building.
"The facade's condition was poor and extensive work was necessary on many intricate features such as the flowers where special moulds had to be taken from the originals."
Minister Day said an important feature of the restoration had been the rebuilding of several of the beautiful 'Juliet' balconies which front Hay Street, adding "this work has been painstakingly undertaken by artisan plasterers using centuries-old techniques but incorporating modern methods."
Minister Day added that internal works had also recently been undertaken at the Theatre including the installation of a new goods hoist.
His Majesty's Theatre is owned by the Western Australian Government and is managed by the Perth Theatre Trust.
