SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium marks Shark Awareness Day with live streams and videos

With SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium being temporarily closed to the public due to COVID-19, they are celebrating Shark Awareness Day (14th July) with a range of free online content.
The SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium team of aquarists continue to care for their 10 different species of sharks and this Shark Awareness Day, aquarist and essential worker Pat Noble is sharing his love of sharks, feeding two of his favourite species and explaining why we should celebrate these fascinating animals.
Our understanding of sharks and rays is ever evolving, with new species being discovered and described all the time. With over 1,200 diverse species, sharks and rays range from commonly misunderstood to entirely unknown. This lack of knowledge means conservation efforts are frequently lacking or insufficient.
Taking place annually on 14th July, Shark Awareness Day is a global celebration of sharks and the important role they play in our ecosystem. It’s an opportunity to learn more about these interesting sea creatures, who are often misunderstood and are under threat from overfishing, the demand for shark products and habitat destruction.
The 10 shark species at the SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium include a grey nurse shark, Port Jackson sharks, leopard sharks, a sandbar whaler, black reef shark, glyphis sharks and more! They are all ambassadors for their species, helping raise awareness of the plight of their wild relatives.
The range of FREE content includes:
• Live streams and videos at www.facebook.com/melbourneaquarium
• Virtual aquarium activities at www.melbourneaquarium.com.au/explore/virtual-aquarium/
• Educational resources at www.merlineducation.com.au
