Shoalhaven Indoor Sports Centre has today unveiled its new mural - designed by local Indigenous artist Warwick Keen and installed by Simon Thomas and Glenn Duffield - celebrating many people coming together, entering as opponents and leaving united as friends.

An initiative of the Bomaderry Community Inc, the artwork draws on the landscape visible around the Sports Centre – from Mt Cambewarra to Mt Cullunghutti. It also features local Indigenous former rugby league and rugby union player Andrew Walker in a celebration of local identity and talent. 

Mayor Amanda Findley was impressed with the story of connection behind the mural and praised the collaboration between Shoalhaven City Council and the Bomaderry Community Inc group in the successful completion of the project. 

“It is wonderful to see the connection to Country and the connections formed through sport celebrated and manifested in such a tangible way. The mural is a wonderful community initiative of the Bomaderry Community Inc and strengthens community connection and pride in the residents of Bomaderry.

“The brief ensured the work reflects the local environment and the community story. It links to the place and the building and references the ideals of participation, inclusivity, diversity and community.

Chairman of Shoalhaven City Council's Arts Board, Councillor John Wells added “the mural aims to tell a story of connection. Connection to Country and to each other, connection through sports and arts. The mural also features inspiring words that reflect the ideals of sporting achievement and overcoming adversity.”

Painting of the huge 160 square metre canvas commenced on 1st December 2020 and was completed 15 days later. This project represents the first step in an exciting contemporary Arts and Cultural program for Bomaderry.
