A series of operational issues with pool plant and equipment have forced repeated closures of the South Hedland Aquatic Centre over the past month.

As late as the weekend, a two stage chlorination process was undertaken at the pool to remove any impurities from the filters. Subsequently, the Western Australian Department of Health reviewed the chlorination processes and advised that they meet expectations.

Operating in a challenging arid tropical environment, the Centre’s original opening in 2013 was impacted by Tropical Cyclone Rusty. It is also understood that recent closures have been as a result of faecal incidents involving pool patrons.

Meanwhile, the Council is arranging for shuttle buses to transport swimmers from the South Hedland Aquatic Centre to the Gratwick Aquatic Centre.
