Southern Barossa receives major sporting boost

Southern Barossa receives major sporting boost
May 7, 2021

Southern Barossa’s local sportspeople are to benefit from a $660,000 upgrade of sporting facilities at Lyndoch Oval.

Cricket, rugby, athletics, football and netball clubs are benefiting from the installation of LED lighting on the oval and four new cricket nets, plus oval upgrades that support a turf wicket.

The investment will support moves by Barossa District Football and Netball Club to relocate from Williamstown to more inclusive facilities at Lyndoch.

Mayor Bim Lange said Lyndoch was realising its potential as a regional sports hub, thanks to the Barossa Council’s partnership with SACA, SANFL and the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing.

Mayor Lange notes “It’s great to see the oval being used to its full potential by such a wide variety of sporting codes.

“The initial feedback from clubs is that they have extra flexibility for training and playing. The oval lighting is a big asset, and with capacity to upgrade lighting to 300 lux in the future, we are well positioned to cater for future growth. With major sports facility upgrades taking place at Angaston, Mount Pleasant, Tanunda, Nuriootpa and now Lyndoch, our community has access to high quality sports infrastructure that meets contemporary standards.”

The Council project is supported by $265,000 in South Australian Government funding.

South Australian Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Corey Wingard said it’s fantastic to see the project finished and benefiting the local community adding “the Barossa region has a proud sporting heritage and this project is a great example of what our Grassroots Footy, Cricket and Netball Facility Program is all about – partnering with sporting codes and local councils to help make sport and exercise as accessible as possible.

“This lighting project will make it easier and safer for people to exercise more often and later in the day.”
