SpeedDome receives much-anticipated enhancement

SpeedDome receives much-anticipated enhancement
July 24, 2020

Western Australia’s SpeedDome has received a vast improvement to its facilities with upgrades to toilets and change rooms, new paintwork and signage to internal areas, and application of anti-slip coatings to entrances, corridors and the internal roller hockey surface.

These works have enhanced the internal and external areas of the venue and ensured the venue upholds the highest safety standards for all visitors and competitors.

In 2016 the venue received a $2.52 million upgrade, installing a new 250 metre timber velodrome cycle track ensuring the venue continues to operate to international training and competition standards. New LED competition lighting was installed in 2019.

Certification has been received from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) which is the worldwide governing body for cycling. The venue is now compliant to UCI standards.

The SpeedDome, owned by Western Australia Government agency VenuesWest has been the training ground for some of the state's top cycling champions, including Cameron Meyer, Sam Welsford and Melissa Hoskins.

Over its history, the SpeedDome has hosted state, national and international events, including the prestigious 1997 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.

Western Australia Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray notes "as well as a top training and competition facility for athletes, the SpeedDome also hosts a number of community roller sports which will benefit from the improvements.

"The upgraded facilities provide an ideal opportunity for cycling groups to promote the sport and encourage more members of the community to join their local track cycling club.

"These upgrades will ensure we continue to provide one of the best cycling facilities in Australia to current athletes, aspiring athletes and local community groups."
