Federal Minister for Sport and Multicultural Affairs Kate Lundy said the Harmony games are a great opportunity for codes to showcase their commitment to diversity and inclusion to their fans and the community.
Senator Lundy explained "sport is a powerful unifier and can cross cultural boundaries, break down social barriers and bring together people from diverse backgrounds."
As part of the celebrations Netball Australia is staging Harmony games during the first round of the ANZ Championships in Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney while Football Federation Australia will mark Harmony Day during rounds 25 and 26 of the Hyundai A-league in Melbourne, Gosford and Brisbane.
Basketball Australia's Sydney Kings v Townsville Crocodiles game on Friday 22nd March will be broadcast live around the country, with commentators Andrew Gaze and Steve Carfino showing support for Harmony Day by wearing orange ties.
The National Rugby League is also joining in Harmony Day celebrations, with premiers Melbourne Storm taking on the Canterbury Bulldogs on tonight (21st March).
Senator Lundy added "to get into the spirit, all spectators are being encouraged to wear orange, the official colour of Harmony Day, to show their support for Australia's rich cultural diversity."
