Sydney Olympic Park Authority’s commitment to providing a world-class Aquatic Centre with a high standard of environmental performance has led to it receiving the Roejen Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2016 Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI) Awards.

The judging of the Environmental Sustainability Award included reviewing the Centre’s management in terms of energy efficiency, water efficiency, waste reduction, new technologies and sustainability practices for procurement.

The Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC) is one of the Authority’s largest energy consuming assets, with 6,183MWh of electricity consumed within the 2012/13 financial year.

To reduce this expenditure, in June 2014, the Aquatic Centre commenced a majorenvironmental initiative installing two 260 kilowatt cogeneration plants.

This Cogeneration project delivered significant savings in energy consumption of 1.8 million kilowatt hours per year and reduces the Aquatic Centre’s production of greenhouse gases by 1,250 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, which is the same as taking 6,280 cars of the streets.

The Aquatic Centre, like all the Park’s sports and entertainment venues, office buildings and apartments, are connected to the Water Reclamation and Management Scheme, which produces recycled water from sewage and stormwater. This recycled water is used for irrigation, ornamental fountains, and toilet flushing.

A recycling program is also implemented at the Aquatic Centre and all other sports venues managed by Sydney Olympic Park Authority that diverts over 70% of waste from landfill.
