Sydney Olympic Park surfing attraction gains development approval

Sydney Olympic Park surfing attraction gains development approval
January 4, 2018

Backers of the URBNSURF Sydney artificial surfing wave attraction have announced the receipt of approval of its development application by the NSW Minister for Planning approved our development application for URBNSURF Sydney, paving the way for the surf park to come to Sydney Olympic Park in 2019.

In a post on LinkedIn, Andrew Ross, Executive Chairman of developer the Wave Park Group explains “with surfing now confirmed as an Olympic sport for the 2020 Tokyo Games, URBNSURF Sydney at Sydney Olympic Park is uniquely positioned to assist the Australian surfing team train and prepare for their upcoming campaign.

Using technology from Wavegarden, URBNSURF Sydney will be capable of generating up to 1,000 surfing waves, of up to two metres in height every hour, and will provide customised surfing experiences to suit all ability levels and board types.

“By taking the ‘guesswork’ out of surfing, we’ll be able to offer Sydney’s 200,000+ surfers, along with aspiring residents and visitors, the opportunity to surf more safely, more conveniently and more often.

“We anticipate the development will generate over 300 jobs during the construction phase, and another 50 full time positions will be created once the facility opens its doors. Accessible by two million Sydney residents in under 30 minutes, the surf park is expected to inject more than $250 million in gross economic contribution to Western Sydney over the life of the project.”

URBNSURF Sydney will also feature a resort-style beach club, licensed bar, restaurant, cafe and food pop-ups, concept retail store, equipment hire centre, functions and events spaces, and other lifestyle sport opportunities.

Ross advises that “a variety of cultural, food, music, film and art festivals, as well as amateur and professional surfing competitions” will be staged at the venue.

Work is expected to commence on the Sydney Olympic Park site by late-2018, with riders expected to take to the first waves by summer 2019/20.
