Sydney Showground partners with Clima to target event sustainability
June 27, 2024

Sydney Showground has partnered with climate solutions organisation Clima to launch a new initiative - 'Climate Conscious Events' - to help clients understand the environmental impacts of their events and provide them with the tools to do something about it.

Aimed at pioneering climate conscious events, Sydney Showground clients will have the opportunity to ‘opt-in’ to the program to measure and report on their event. Reports are personalised and provide clear insights that allow clients to build tailored strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An added option is to become Climate Conscious Certified by offsetting emissions and supporting carbon projects that align with the client's values.

According to Clima, the event industry accounts for over 10% of global carbon emissions and 62% of event organisers are planning to host more environmentally conscious events in 2024.

Sydney Showground General Manager, Darryl Jeffrey noted “Event sustainability has been a core mission for our venue over the past 12 months and partnering with Clima is another important step in this journey.

“Data shows that event organisers are wanting to host more environmentally conscious events and that customers feel better when attending these events. As a venue, it is our job to help our clients achieve this goal and support them in a proactive way.

"By working with Clima we hope to arm our clients with the resources and tools for them to take positive steps towards becoming net zero, while we, as a venue, continue to invest in the sustainability of our venue and work towards this same goal.”

For the award-winning venue, this partnership is another step in its sustainability journey following the launch of its Environment, Social, and Governance strategy late last year and its recent investment in a $4 million LED lighting upgrade to reduce ENGIE stadium's power consumption by half on event days.

Sydney Showground, together with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA), are working towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
