read moreWhile the Tasmanian Government moves forward with plans for logging in old-growth forests, its Invest Tasmania initiative is undertaking a search for ideas to develop sensitive and appropriate tourism experiences and complementary infrastructure development in its world famous reserve areas.
Stating that it aims “to stake a claim as the environmental tourism capital of the world”, the Tasmanian Government is inviting private investors and tourism operators to submit proposals for developments in the Tasmanian Wilderness and World Heritage Area, the State’s 19 national parks and several hundred reserves.
The proposal states “these natural areas provide significant environment, social, cultural and economic benefits and experiences to Tasmanians and visitors alike but they are yet to achieve their full potential and the opportunity is now.
“Tasmania is reaching out to private investors and tourism operators to support sensitive and appropriate tourism experiences and complementary infrastructure in the Tasmanian Wilderness and World Heritage Area, national parks and reserves.
“And while these natural areas are already home to some great tourism product - such as The Maria Island Walk - they area also ready for some reimagining - such as Eagles Eyrie.”
Tourism is worth $2.4 billion to the Tasmanian economy per year and employs 28,000 Tasmanians.
The Tasmanian Government plans to grow the tourism industry to 1.5 million visitors per year by 2020.
