Tennis ACT believes that multi-million-dollar upgrade of the Canberra Tennis Centre will allow the Territory to host the second-tiered events, with up to 4,000 seats available to host the Davis Cup on the main court.
ACT Sports Minister Shane Rattenbury has announced that the Canberra International Challenger men's tournament and an International Tennis Federation (ITF) women's event will take place at the venue later this year.
In addition, Tennis ACT Chief Executive Ross Triffit says a bid to host other events will follow, stating "the first opportunity to host the Fed Cup or Davis Cup is likely to be February.
"So if we do a good job in November with the Canberra International, we're certainly on the radar for Fed Cup and Davis Cup.
"We've done the best job we can in terms of providing the right kind of venue for that event.
"I think we'll be very well-placed next year for the events."
Triffit added that the schedule announced for the tennis centre catered to all professional levels, stating "it's very exciting.
"We have Australian-ranking tournament points on offer for players to improve their Australian ranking. We've got world-ranking points for our aspiring professionals and we've also got a range of junior-development tournaments as well."
Redevelopment of the Canberra Tennis Centre was undertaken in tandem with the construction of a new Next Gen Club (formerly Next Generation Health & Lifestyle clubs).
Located on the site of the old indoor sports facility, Next Gen Canberra was built as public private partnership with Tennis ACT, with which it shares its grounds.
The $27 million project provides a public access tennis facility alongside a multi-faceted health, leisure and lifestyle club.
The club brings to Canberra a new way to enjoy a healthy lifestyle with superb facilities including indoor and outdoor 25 metre pools, relaxation areas, squash courts, cafe, bar, bistro and lounge, plus a 1500 metre2 gym and exercise studios.
Next Gen General Manager Tony Fraser recently told Canberra-based media ("this is not just a gym, it's like a one-stop shop."
Members have access to a cafe, a lounge and dining area, children's play area, crèche, business zone and outdoor entertainment areas, while an exclusive area includes an indoor spa, 'experience shower' and zen Japanese garden. There's also a Scandinavian-style crushed ice station members can cool down after a visit to the steam room or sauna.
It's the sixth gym for the Next Gen brand across Australian and New Zealand, with most of its predecessors also originating from partnerships with tennis clubs.
Next Gen Canberra opens on 22nd June.
