read moreAccording to the latest visitor data released by Tourism Research Australia, tourism in the Territory is growing strongly on the previous year and although still down on pre-pandemic levels, the NT has attracted 1.25 million domestic visitors throughout the year, ending March 2022.
These figures are a 40% increase compared to the year ending March 2021, with a 51% growth from interstate markets.
The Territory also performed stronger than Australia as a whole, with interstate overnight trips decreasing by 51% nationally and expenditure decreasing by 42% compared to pre-pandemic.
NT Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Nicole Manison enthused “It is fantastic to see 1.25 million domestic visitors have spent $1.5 billion in the Territory. That is $1.5 billion going right back into the Territory economy.
“This data shows tourism is bouncing back in the Territory with domestic visitors staying longer and spending more per trip than pre-pandemic.”
Territorians travelling within the Territory for holiday purposes jumped by 19% compared to the year ending March 2020. This jump could be attributed to the highly popular Territory Tourism Vouchers, first introduced by the Territory Government in July 2020.
The Territory Government invested $20.2 million to deliver four rounds of vouchers, generating almost $36 million in sales across the Territory.
The vouchers encouraged Territorians to holiday within the NT by offering a $200 incentive which was redeemable on a $1 for $1 basis. and could be used on multiple tourism experiences across the Northern Territory.
