read moreAs part of a national campaign to celebrate the city’s array of parks and open spaces, Townsville City Council is going green this week.
Landmarks, including Victoria Bridge, the Palmer St Lighthouse and the Townsville sign will all light up green to say thanks to Council’s staff members who tirelessly work to keep green spaces looking fresh.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Council looked after more than 300 parks and open spaces for everyone’s enjoyment and notes “parks are an important part of our urban and suburban landscapes, and are a gathering space for friends, families and the wider community.
“During the last few months, parks have become even more integral in our community’s wellbeing. With gyms and other recreational facilities closed, residents from Paluma to Cungulla and everywhere in between have been using their local parks to get some fresh air and exercise.”
Mayor Hill said Townsville was joining cities across the country to celebrate parks this week and added “we’re in good company, with Story Bridge in Brisbane, Adelaide Oval, the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel and other venues turning green to help celebrate parks across the country.
“If you want to get involved and show your support, wear green and tag your pictures #gogreenforparks.”
