In front of a huge hometown crowd the Fire christened the recently opened $14.6 million Townsville RSL Stadium.
The facility, which will also host netball, volleyball, futsal, and badminton clubs has been designed to handle North Queensland's unpredictable weather and has been designed to serve as a post-disaster recovery centre.
Townsville Mayor Les Tyrell recently explained "this will be a huge benefit to the city for sporting events in the Townsville area. (The new venue) allows people to watch world-class sports."
The 2,000-seat complex has a sports floor area of 2,613 metre2 and a gym floor area of 575 metre2.
Facilities include three indoor airconditioned multi-use playing courts, community rooms, a gymnasium, public amenities and disability access, change rooms, reception area, administration space, kitchen and cafe and stores and a first-floor mezzanine.
The stadium has been funded by the three levels of government with Queensland Government providing $8.2 million, Townsville City Council contributing $3.35 million and Federal Government $3.05 million.
The Council is contributing a further $2 million for improved parking and road works.
