read moreA feasibility study commissioned by the Townsville City Council (TCC) into the financial viability of a major events precinct for the city has estimated construction costs of more than $311 million.
The study investigated the viability of co-location and integration of Townsville's current football stadium and entertainment and convention centre facilities in a single CBD location.
Commenting on the study, Queensland Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said it was hugely important to map the possible future growth of Townsville.
Minister Dickson explained "the TCC has been a driving force in the completion of this feasibility study, and I thank them for their hard work in bringing these findings forward.
"(The Queensland) Government is committed to providing sport, recreational and tourism opportunities wherever possible, however the financial well-being of our state must remain our highest priority."
The report's findings are yet to take into account the funding needed for site acquisition, which has been estimated to push the project cost out to more than $360 million.
Minister Dickson added "once the TCC releases the full feasibility report, the wider Townsville community will have the opportunity to examine the findings in detail.
"(The Government) remains strong supporters of the North Queensland Cowboys, who have established themselves as an integral part of the Townsville and wider North Queensland community, and (we) will endeavour to ensure they stay that way for many years to come."
