read moreAn announcement by the Queensland Government that the ageing public transit centre in Roma Street will be demolished in 2020 appears to be a precursor to the planned $2 billion Brisbane Live precinct.
Queensland Treasurer Jackie Trad recently announced that early works would begin at the site next year, commenting “Roma Street Station is a key link between the city centre, Roma Street Parkland, Spring Hill’s schools, Caxton St, the Petrie Barracks, Suncorp Stadium and the cultural precinct at South Bank.
“However the Brisbane Transit Centre is well past its prime.”
With demolition of the 1980s Roma Street Transit Centre and the adjoining Hotel Jen set to commence in about 18 months, the site will then be redeveloped as new underground Cross River Rail station and AEG Ogden’s Brisbane Live precinct.
Like Madison Square Garden in New York City or Melbourne’s Federation Square, the Brisbane Live development makes use of valuable air rights above existing rail lines as well as the connectivity that Roma Street has to every rail line in the South East Queensland rail network.
At the centrepiece of the plan, which is based on AEG’s LA Live complex, is a new 17,000 seat world class arena which will showcase international superstar concerts and performances as well as world sporting events.
Looking forward to the completion of the project, Minister Trad added “by 2025 this end of the City will be totally transformed.”
