Set to be the south east Asia’s first attraction powered by renewable energy, Universal Studios Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has broken ground on the new Minion Land.

Due to open in 2024, Minion Land will be home to themed shops and restaurants, as well as rides including Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, an immersive motion-simulator 3D ride with a realistic projection system.

Part of the S$4.5 billion (US$2.9) expansion of RWS, the themed zone will be powered by renewable energy, using smart energy systems such as digital twin technology, demand flow controllers and high efficiency motors, RWS said in a press release.

Resorts World Sentosa Chief Executive, Tan Hee Teck commented “we are excited to break ground on Universal Studios Singapore’s newest themed zone, Minion Land.”

During the groundbreaking event, Tan said Minion Land at Universal Studios Singapore will be “the first attraction in Singapore, and possibly in this region, to be powered by renewable energy” (via The Straits Times).

The first phase of Genting Singapore’s RWS 2.0 development project includes expanding Universal Studios Singapore and the S.E.A. Aquarium, which will become the Singapore Oceanarium.

Super Nintendo World is also heading to the park at Resorts World Sentosa. In addition, RWS is renovating three of its hotels, the Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and Festive Hotel.

Tan added “Resorts World Sentosa aims to bring fresh and compelling experiences to our guests through timely rejuvenation of our line up of attractions, as we continue to welcome more international travellers with the opening of borders.

“Even as we embark on our expansion plans, Resorts World Sentosa stays committed to ensuring that our developments are sustainable and in sync with Singapore’s larger sustainable tourism goals.

Singapore Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Alvin Tan went on to comment “I am very optimistic that with the easing of restrictions and the opening of travel, there will soon be more people coming in to Resorts World Sentosa, to USS, and to Minion Land when it opens in 2024.”
