The newly upgraded Belconnen Skatepark was officially opened on Saturday by local MPS Chris Bourke and Andrew Leigh.

The new Convic designed park retained the original 'Belco Bowl' with the addition of a new street skate plaza with a mix of sculptures/obstacles, mini ramp, shelters, seating, new lighting and viewing areas.

The upgrade aimed to produce a high quality skate park of contemporary international skating and bmx standard with a focus on street skating to reflect demand and to offer a different, but complimentary, experience to other skate parks in Canberra.

Funding for the upgrade came from the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program matched by input from the ACT Government.

The Canberra Skateboarding Association backed the project which, in addition to the design from Convic, included input from Concrete Skate Parks, Manteena and Oxigen.

Unfortunately, rain hampered a skateboard 'best trick' event from going ahead at the opening, with the event being re-scheduled for a later date.
