read moreIndustry body VIC Active it looking forward to gyms and indoor recreation centres in Victoria being able to operate with a maximum of 20 patrons as of tomorrow.
With Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews today announcing a further easing of the lockdown measures so that patron numbers can rise to 100 from 22nd November, VIC Active Spokesperson, Tim Schleiger stated “it’s time for Victorians to awaken after seven months of COVID-19 imposed slumber.
“The Victorian fitness industry comprises more than 45,000 staff and we know more than 1,000,000 people regularly attend a fitness centre.”
VIC Active is making two callouts to Victorians now that these COVID-19 restrictions are progressively being lifted:
1. To patrons - get back to your fitness centres and celebrate life. It is a proven fact that exercise not only improves your physical health, but it is also a key driver of positive mental health outcomes.
2. To the 45,000 people who proudly work in the fitness industry - never underestimate the vital role you play in the healthy and balanced lives of the people you serve. Be proud and enjoy it!
Schleiger added “VIC Active also thanks the owners and professionals who comprise this industry.
“We have stayed united and advocated for the prompt and safe reopening of fitness centres during lockdowns. It’s been a long and painful campaign but - it’s time.”
Fitness Australia Chief Executive, Barrie Elvish also acknowledged “the industry has worked hard to get a more common sense approach to gym reopenings and we are very pleased with today’s announcement (of further easing by Premier Andrews).
“For the community and the nearly 1 million Victorians who have a gym membership, they can now look forward to getting back into their gym routine within a COVID-Safe environment. Accessing a fitness facility is essential for people who use exercise to maintain their mental health, physical health and overall wellbeing.”
Advising that the industry could now see the light at the end of the tunnel and prepare for more robust operations while still ensuring consumer safety and confidence to exercise, Elvish added “as an industry, we have strict COVID-Safe protocols in place to protect everyone and businesses will do whatever is required to keep members and staff safe. Th gym will look a little bit different as people start to return from tomorrow, but the industry is 100% committed to their safety. The last thing these businesses want is to be shut down again.
“We know gyms are safe and today’s announcement signals a more realistic approach to giving people much needed access to essential services that improve their long-term health.”
