Victoria Police arrest three over huge illegal steroid seizure from Port Melbourne gym
December 9, 2023

Victoria Police have made what they believe is the state's biggest ever seizure of illegal steroids in a swoop on an alleged supply operation based out of a Port Melbourne gym.

Following a seven-month long investigation, three people have been arrested for their part in the alleged illegal sale of steroids and prescription medication online.

Executing search warrants on Friday morning, Victoria Police seized millions of dollars worth of steroids and prescription medications in quantities so large it will take several days for them to work out the exact quantity of steroids now in their possession.

One report has indicated that trucks will need to be brought in to collect the volume of drugs seized.

It's alleged two men have been buying drugs from an overseas supplier and on-selling them online and from the Port Melbourne gym.

The men, aged 27 and 32, were arrested on Friday with a search of a Docklands apartment also uncovering the illegal steroids and medication, label makers and more than $130,000 in cash.

Detectives were also able to identify multiple distribution centres.

Other properties searched include the gym at Port Melbourne, where illegal steroids were found, and a property in Flemington where police found more illegal steroids and $45,000 in cash.

The men have been charged with trafficking prescription medication and anabolic steroids, trafficking diazepam and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

A 37-year-old Docklands woman was also arrested and charged for possessing methylamphetamine.

A number of search warrants were also executed in the ACT in relation to the syndicate.

Explaining that a sophisticated distribution centre believed to be the biggest of its kind in the state, Victoria Police Detective Inspector, Patrick Watkinson advised media “what caught our attention is that they're allegedly selling drugs to organised crime figures and not only profiting heavily from it but also facilitating their luxury lifestyle.

"The community may think dealing with performance-enhancing drugs is harmless but we're looking at the bigger picture here - which is to target all aspects of organised crime including the people associated with it."

Further charges are expected to be laid once the exact amount of drugs and cash seized has been established.

Detective Inspector Watkinson added medication should be supplied by accredited doctors and pharmacists and not personal trainers from a gym.
