read moreThe Sovereign Hill Museums Association has received $25,000 in new Victorian Government funding to boost the valuable efforts of local volunteers.
Victorian Minister for Regional Cities Denis Napthine announced the funding and said the Sovereign Hills Museums Association would use the grant to recruit and train more volunteers.
Minister Napthine "Sovereign Hill is a tremendous asset for Ballarat and to the State of Victoria. It is a significant driver of tourism and an important part of the Ballarat region's economy.
"Over the years it has also served as a valuable educational tool for generations of Victorians but none of this would have been possible without the efforts of the volunteers who continue to make Sovereign Hill a success.
"This grant will allow the Sovereign Hill Museums Association to attract new volunteers, provide training for existing volunteers and undertake succession planning which is critical for the future of organisations which are reliant upon the selfless input of volunteers."
The $25,000 will help fund three workshops featuring experts from Museums Australia and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.
Dr Napthine said the recent round of volunteer small grants had provided more than $464,000 to more than 100 organisations across Victoria, adding "the life of our community just would not be the same without our army of volunteers - our services, our schools, our community organisations, our sports clubs, our towns and cities all benefit from the vital role played by Victorian volunteers.
"The (Victorian) Government recognises this and has committed $5.2 million over the next four years to support the important social, economic and environmental contribution volunteers make to Victoria."
Victorians interested in volunteering will find useful information and a range of volunteering opportunities at Victoria's Volunteering Portal at www.volunteering.vic.gov.au
