The reopening of the Queensland border to residents of Sydney and Victoria is expected to a lead to a rise in job advertisements as tourism businesses look to cater for summer visitors.

Wednesday’s announcement by the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s that residents from Greater Sydney and Victoria will be free to visit the state from 1st December has already seen theme park operator Village Roadshow confirmed it will advertise about 500 summer positions that were put on hold during the border uncertainty.

As reported by The Courier-Mail many tourism businesses still have staff stood down on JobKeeper payments who will be called back into action now that the unrestricted travel from the rest of Australia is allowed.

Immediately prior to the Queensland election, Village Roadshow announced a jobs freeze on hundreds of positions traditionally required for the December-to-Easter period.

The ongoing takeover battle saw the company’s shares resume trading on the ASX as a $3-a-share offer from bidder from private equity group BGH Capital.

It has also been reported that one of the two shareholders that had previously opposed the offer, Spheria Investments now intends to back the bid.

Village Roadshow shares jumped by 17.1% to $2.87 yesterday, its highest price since March.
