Outstanding achievements by individuals and groups in the Western Australian sport and recreation industry have been recognised at an awards breakfast at the State Reception Centre in Kings Park.

Presented on the morning of Wednesday 30th July, the 2014 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards were judged across eight categories covering participation, volunteer support, workforce development and infrastructure planning, and this year’s winners were from a variety of organisations.

One of the country’s most remote swimming events, the First National Kimberley Lake Argyle Swim, took out Event of the Year, while Football West received the Commitment to Participation Award for their Grassroots Equipment Donations Program.

The Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence, with a cheque for $10,000, was awarded to Royal Life Saving Society Western Australia. They also took out the Creating a Better Workforce Award.

Commenting on Royal Life Saving's win, acting Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Redman stated “Royal Life Saving is a worthy winner of this year’s top award.

“Their submissions showed their dedication to engaging and educating a range of at-risk target groups in water awareness and safety - a must in a country such as ours.”

The John Graham Award went to Robert Welch OAM from Scarboro Surf Live Saving Club for his extensive service to the sport and recreation industry over 37 years, not only in his career but also as a dedicated volunteer.

Management Best Practice Award - Western Australian Cricket Association

Regional Excellence Award - Inclusion WA (Karratha Inclusive Sport Program)

Supporting Volunteers Award - City of Joondalup (Clubs in-focus Program)

Technology in Practice Award - Seniors Recreation Council of Western Australia (Seniors Exergaming WA)

John Graham Award winner - Robert Welch OAM

Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence winner - Royal Life Saving Society Western Australia
