read moreWith VicHealth’s This Girl Can Week returning in 2024 from 10th to 17th November, women across the state are being encouraged to come together and get active at one of the many free or low-cost events on offer.
This Girl Can Week 2024 will see sporting groups and clubs, local councils and gyms host a range of fun, safe and welcoming activities for women of all abilities, ages and cultural backgrounds.
From cultural dance and basketball, to stand-up paddleboarding and active playgroups, there are plenty of activities for women to get involved in across the state.
VicHealth’s Head of This Girl Can, Rebecca Ahern, says this year’s theme “Together We’re Unstoppable” is about demonstrating the incredible things that happen when women get active together.
“We know that for women to feel confident enough to get active, they need to feel supported, safe and welcome,” Ahern advised.
“This Girl Can Week 2024 is all about providing opportunities for women of all backgrounds to get active while finding joy, community, and connection. I encourage women across Victoria to visit the This Girl Can website and find out how they can get involved.”
Research has shown that a fear of judgement and not having safe and welcoming spaces to get active are some of the barriers preventing women from getting involved in physical activity.
“We must continue to challenge the norms of what being “physically active” looks like. It shouldn’t matter where you’re from, how old you are, or what size clothes you wear—everyone should feel safe and welcome to exercise and move in our community,” Ahern added.
“Whether you’re new to movement, returning to an activity you used to love, or are ready to try something new, there are inclusive, welcoming and beginner-friendly activities happening across the state.”
