Development of the GoWake Cable Park, part of the Andergrove Lakes Master Planned Community in Mackay, is underway.
The development, seen as a major boost for tourism in Mackay, will include cable wakeboarding lakes as well as a master planned community encompassing retail, accommodation, cafes, restaurants, homes, parkland, walkways and bikeways.
Stage one involves the construction of Lake Poco, the first of two cable wakeboarding lakes, which is expected to be fully operational by Christmas. The second stage of the project, including the larger Lake Grande, is expected to be open in two years.
When the plans were unveiled earlier this year Mackay Tourism General Manager David Phillips told local newspaper The Daily Mercury that the project was a "great win" for the city.
Phillips stated "it's an ideal investment in tourism for Mackay and our region, given the demographic and disposable income that's here.
"It adds another reason to stay longer in Mackay."
Lake Poco will be a five tower clockwise cable lake and Lake Grande will be a counter-clockwise six tower lake. The cable system will incorporate kickers and sliders for wakeboarder jumps.
Operator and GoWake Cable Parks Director Kirk Langford told The Daily Mercury that said the freshwater lakes could employ between 15 and 20 people each.
