Work starts on Wellington’s Indoor Sports Centre

Work starts on Wellington’s Indoor Sports Centre
January 19, 2010

Construction of Wellington's long-awaited Indoor Community Sports Centre (ICSC) has begun at Kilbirnie's Cobham Park.

The main contractor, Mainzeal, has started the first major phase of the project, with Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast welcoming the start of work, stating "this is a much-needed sports facility for Wellington. And it'll be a high-profile project - people will be able to see it grow and take shape over the coming months."

The Council's Acting Chief Executive, Derek Fry, says the ICSC will provide top-quality playing and training facilities for netball, basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports for the Wellington community and schools.

The ICSC, with its 12 courts, will be able to host local, national and potentially international sports tournaments, filling a gap in Wellington's sporting infrastructure.

The cost for the project is likely to be around $47.5 million.

The ICSC is expected to be completed around August 2011.
