Building Committee Chair Nigel Thomas said Hutchinson was selected after a "robust" and "rigorous" examination of the five preferred tenders, stating "the Building Committee and Project Managers Davis Langdon are satisfied that Hutchinson has the expertise, knowledge and resources to complete the program within the tight budget."
Hutchinson is a 100 year old company that has delivered a range of major commercial projects from industrial, sporting, health, retail and education.
Thomas said significant preliminary work had been conducted to ensure the project would be delivered within the $6.4 million budget, adding "a number of adjustments were made to the scope of the work, but we are comfortable that the builders can deliver the additional three indoor court top quality facility for the community."
Stage one comprises a refurbishment of the existing office and dressing room facilities, jointly funded by the Queensland Government and Mackay Basketball.
Work is likely to commence in mid October, with Thomas concluding "we need to complete the first stage by the end of December to meet funding commitments."
Mackay Basketball President Jason Borg said appointing a builder was a "red-letter day" for the sport.
Borg explained "a considerable amount of work has gone into getting to this point and it is certainly a history-making moment for basketball in this city."
To be owned and operated by Mackay Basketball, the modern multi-use indoor facility will cater for the growing demand for indoor sports and other like-minded activities.
Plans include the completion of an open-plan stadium with three indoor courts, additional toilets, dressing rooms and a kiosk.
The project is madepossible thanks to a $6 million funding commitment from the Australian Government's Department of Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government under the Community Infrastructure Grants program.
