read moreTamworth Regional Council will officially open a newly developed skatepark at the Viaduct Park Youth Recreation Hub on 26th May 2019 with a specialised event to showcase the new facility.
The $1.7 million project began construction in 2018 and was built with the intention of creating an outdoor, active space for young people to play and learn new skills in a safe and motivating environment.
Totem Skateboarding, the experts in skateboarding event management will put together the ultimate opening event and are inviting skateboarding enthusiasts from all over the country to come and experience the regionally-based facility.
Totem will bring with them a team of coaches and a portfolio of professional skaters, sponsored by VANS who will take to the park for skateboarding demos, workshops and trick competitions. There will be equipment available for use and skateboarding merchandise up for grabs.
Commenting on the project, Chris Vaughan, General Manager at Totem Skateboarding advised “we are so pumped to be involved in showcasing this awesome, state-of-the-art facility in Tamworth. We are passionate about working with young people and providing opportunities for them to learn new skills in a positive environment.
Looking forward to the opening, Tamworth Region acting Mayor, Phil Betts added “Totem are some of the best in the business when it comes to these kinds of events and we are looking forward to working with them to create a really great day to celebrate the opening of the skatepark.”
The skatepark is the first phase of the Viaduct Park Youth Recreation Hub, with future plans to expand the offering of the area still underway.
Council also intends to use the facility as a draw-card to host regional events including skateboard competitions.
Acting Mayor Betts added “the standard of this new skatepark is among the best in the country and holds the potential for Tamworth to host some of the biggest skateboarding competitions and events in our backyard.
“The great thing about this park is that it will cater to all abilities. From young kids to the pros, there’s something for everyone to use and enjoy.”
The Viaduct Park Youth hub received $999,308 from the Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund and a contribution from Tamworth Regional Council of $738,000 to construct the skatepark.
