read moreWorld Rugby, the global governing body of rugby union, has announced details of an eight-year strategic plan designed to further the profile, development, sustainability and success of the women’s game.
In partnership with its Women’s Advisory Committee, World Rugby will carry out a consultation process with players, unions, regional associations, fans, commercial and broadcast partners in order to achieve a series of targets for the period from 2017 to 2025.
The organisation will work with the sport’s global community to increase overall participation in women’s rugby union around the world through a sustainable development program. World Rugby is also hoping to build high performance though quality competition, as well as drive leadership and inclusive governance.
Aiming to further the development and sustainability of women’s rugby, the strategy will aim to stimulate: increased participation; higher performance through competition; ‘inspirational
Leadership’; a profile that breaks down barriers; and a growing audience and investment avenues.
Katie Sadleir, World Rugby’s General Manager for Women’s Rugby, explained that in order to increase participation the body had to “deliver opportunities in the playground, the podium and the boardroom.”
She added “it is critical that globally we are innovative, bold and prepared to act on the collective needs of the game and a whole new generation of players and fans.”
According to World Rugby figures, more than 2.2 million women and girls are now playing rugby worldwide, with 39% of the two million participants in last year’s Get Into Rugby promotion having been female.
World Rugby Chair Bill Beaumont stated “we are committed to working with the rugby community to develop a bold eight-year plan that identifies opportunities on and off the field, addresses challenges and builds a better, stronger game for all.”
